Message to friends of Hong Kong
Dear friends of Hong Kong,
Despite recent disruptions, the fundamentals and institutional underpinning Hong Kong's economy and society are strong. We remain a safe, open, welcoming and cosmopolitan society and an internationally connected, vibrant, and dynamic economy.
The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region remains committed to resolving issues through dialogue, and rejects the use of violence. The Government has started a cross-sector dialogue to talk through differences and look for common ground with no preconditions in the spirit of healing and reconciliation. It is our sincere wish to discuss issues, problems and solutions in a calm, respectful and meaningful way. Hong Kong people have a long tradition of peaceful and rational protest, which continues. We reject the use of violence to resolve our current challenges and we place our trust and faith in the rule of law which has served us so well for so many decades. We are resolutely committed to “One Country, Two Systems” which provides the constitutional guarantee for Hong Kong’s continued development and success as a free and open society and economy.
Some of you may have read a newspaper advertisement we placed today. The advertisement, which is attached for your reference, stresses our determination to achieve a peaceful, rational and reasonable resolution.
You may have also learnt that the Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Mrs Carrie Lam, announced on 4 September that the Government will "formally withdraw" the Fugitive Offenders Bill. The decision to withdraw the Bill is one of "four actions" announced by Mrs Lam to foster dialogue that can help society move forward. More details are available from the press release (https://www.info.gov.hk/gia/general/201909/04/P2019090400704.htm ). Attached below is an infographic about the four actions announced by Mrs Lam yesterday for your ease of reference:
Hong Kong will no doubt bounce back.
We always do.
